CalArts Schools of Art and Critical Studies Announce REEF Artists in Residence

Last week, the School of Critical Studies and the School of Art announced the recipients of the inaugural CalArts REEF Artists in Residence program. From April through Sept. 30, the four newly named residents will share a cost-free studio space at Maker City LA, located in the REEF building in Downtown Los Angeles, as well as an award to support their work over the residency period.

Elliot Vredenburg (Critical Studies MA 14), Emerson Whitney (Critical Studies MFA 14), Danielle Bustillo (Art MFA 14) and Eve Lauryn LaFountain (Art-Film/Video MFA 14) are the selected artists.

“These graduates promise to fulfill diverse and engaged studio projects over the next six months,” said Dean of the School of Critical Studies Amanda Beech in a press release. “We look forward to seeing their work as they progress through their residencies. We would like to thank The REEF for making these residencies possible and for this unique investment in the work of CalArts alumni.”

The CalArts REEF Residencies foster a significant connection between writing and art making. The select CalArts alumni are currently working on projects that require the support of a studio and resources at crucial points in their early careers. While the REEF artists do not have to collaborate, cross-fertilization is welcome.

The next CalArts REEF Residencies will begin from Oct. 1, 2015 to Sept. 29, 2016. A call for proposals will be made public in the coming months.
