CalArtians Receive 2014 Creative Arts Emmys

CalArts alumni artists from the schools of Film/Video and Theater—Alonso Ramirez Ramos (Film/Video BFA 10), Jasmin Lai (Film/Video 12), Sean Szeles (Film/Video BFA 03), Ian Worrel (Film/Video BFA 08) and Gloria Lamb (Theater BFA 05)—won 2014 Creative Arts Emmys on Saturday (Aug. 16) at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. 

Ramos won an Emmy for Outstanding Short-Format Animated Program for Disney’s Mickey Mouse. He is currently a storyboard artist on creator Alex Hirsch’s (Film/Video BFA 07) Gravity Falls on Disney Channel.
 
In the Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation category, which is a juried award, three CalArtians were honored: Worrel, for art direction on Gravity Falls, Szeles for creating the Cartoon Network (CN) pilot Long Live The Royals and Lai, in recognition for the CN short The Powerpuff Girls: Dance Pantsed. Lai is currently a background painter on the CN animated series, Steven Universe, while Szeles serves as a writer and storyboard artist for that network’s Regular Show.
 
Lamb’s work as an Art Director on ABC’s 87th Annual Academy Awards received an Emmy for Outstanding Art Direction for Variety, Non-Fiction, Reality or Reality-Competition Programming. Lamb also art directed the Teen Choice Awards 2014 earlier this month.

The Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony is set for Monday, Aug. 25. Among the nominees up for an Emmy is actor Don Cheadle (Theater BFA 86), who received his third consecutive nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his role in Showtime’s House of Lies.
